Though the slaves were freed on January 1, 1863 by the Emancipation Proclamation, the slaves in Texas did not know about this freedom until 2yrs later on June 19, 1865. Slavery was then truly abolished on December 6th, 1865 although the disobedience of the white citizens in America against the orders of the government to free the slaves would turn this liberating moment into a long standing battle for basic human rights.
